Milk in a bag... WTF, Canada???

Yup. It comes in bags. Also in cartons... but if you're serious about your milk, you get yourself a pitcher and bag it, baby.

It's funny how many people are surprised that I'm constantly amused by this concept. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure bagged milk doesn't exist in the US anywhere. Please, send me a link or a picture if it does.

Next, let's discuss the double-double. From their respective Wikis:

"A Canadian term made popular by Tim Hortons outlets is "double-double," which indicates a coffee with two creams and two sugars. It was added to the second edition of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary on August 10, 2004" (Tim Hortons)

""Double-Double" - a double cheeseburger (two slices of cheese and two meat patties)" (In-N-Out)

The first time I walked into a Tim Hortons and heard someone order a double-double I was disappointed that they did not walk away with a tasty, tasty burger. Keep in mind, they add the cream and sugar for you, which is why you don't just ask for a large coffee... you ask for a large coffee, double cream, double sugar. Or, a large double-double. This is now pretty much a daily staple of mine, considering that there are Timmy's EVERYWHERE. Canadians love their coffee. Unlike California, where your choices are generally Starbucks or 7-11, there are at least 4 major chains of coffee shops here. It's awesome.

We'll end with a little bit about weather. In SoCal, "summer" pretty much starts in April/May, with a brief timeout for some lovely June Gloom in San Diego, and it ends sometime in October. So imagine my surprise when the weather man last night tells people to cover up or bring inside your vulnerable plants, because the temp is going to drop to near freezing. IN JUNE. And it did!! I wake up this morning, the sun is shining outside, so I'm wearing a tshirt and flip flops. My feet were freezing by the time I got to school. And it's supposed to be back up to around 27 C tomorrow. So bizarre. The lesson here? Never put all of your blankets and sweaters away. You could need them at ANY TIME.

Milk.

In a bag.

Like, from cows?

No from chickens.

They get eggs from cows.

Yup. From cows. Crazy, isn't it?

Milk comes in bags! That's the way it is. That's why you have that hook cutter thing magnet'd to your refrigerator!

Also Protip: Don't search for "double double" on google image search while at work with the SFW filters off!

Also also: I can't figure out how to post without deleting myself!

Craziness.

The thing I hated most about Canada was that the Mt. Dew there isn't caffeinated. It just seemed really strange that Mt. Dew, my daily source of caffeine, did not have any.

Also, the weather sounds a lot like North Dakota, though being more Eastern, I'm guessing it's a bit wetter there. We had near freezing temps overnight a few weeks ago.

Huh.

What else comes in bags up there?

Why there's all kinds of things that come in bags in Canada! Oh my oh me, what doesn't come in a bag?

DAMnED BAGS. I hate them. No bags for me.

So why the difference? Are bags that much cheaper? Do they make it easier to ship? Are they standard 2 mill bags or extra thick?

I MUST KNOW

I've yet to buy one. We don't use enough milk for me to have an open bag sitting in a pitcher in the fridge without it going bad before we use it up. But I'll check prices next time I'm at the store.

My hometown sometimes sold milk in bags. On the other hand, I grew up about an hour outside of Ontario. Also, I was raised on Canadian radio and television.

Maybe that's why I'm so polite.

Milk in bags...sorry, not a new thing. Like most everything else in this rerun world, it's been done. Back in the old days (c. 1970) there was a dairy in San Diego that actually delivered milk and other dairy items TO YOUR HOME! Yes, dear children, there was a time... I think the dairy was called Hollandia, but that's not important now. What is relevant is that the milk came in half gallon bags that were put into a plastic pitcher with a rather flimsy handle. We cut a corner of the bag to pour milk, but I don't remember anything that was provided to close the bag. So the onions that were not in Tupperware could sneak into the nice white milk for sport, spoil the milk and run back to their Corningware bowl. Another fun thing was watching a full bag split on the linoleum when dropped from about chest height. Ah, those were the days!

I almost forgot to give the weather report for SoCal. Today was near 90 F with clear blue skies and a slight breeze ruffling our palm fronds. Looks like the same for the weekend. We'll have to get our double-doubles on ice.
